The founding and development of Winston and Salem are intertwined. Both have a wealth of architecture from the 19th and 20th century that has been well documented in public archives. In this workshop, we will explore the resources to access vintage images and discuss the history of Winston and Salem architecture. Our first session, will be an online discussion and the second and third sessions will be walking tours to photograph historic buildings and compare them to the archival photographs. The first photo walk will be in Old Salem and the second will explore the area around Bailey Park. The final session will be an online discussion, share and review, of our photographs. The class is intended for students who have a working knowledge of their camera. Mobile phone cameras are also welcome. The class will be limited to eight participants and social distancing protocols will be followed on the walking tour.

PLEASE NOTE: This class has four sessions. FRIDAY 10/22 (1st Class) and FRIDAY 11/5 (final class) will be via ZOOM from 7pm to 8pm. The two SATURDAY photowalk classes 10/23 and 10/30 will be in person, socially distant, as we walk, take note of, and photograph the Historical areas of Salem Square (Wk 2) and Bailey Park (Wk3) from 1pm to 3pm.

  • Masks and a comfortable pair of walking shoes are required.

My photographic journey started about as long ago as I can remember with film and flashbulbs. I moved to a 35 mm SLR as I finished high school and documented my trip through college and graduate school. A broken camera meter led to many years of familiarity with a hand held light meter and exposure control. Most of my photography has been a record of my travels while doing research and teaching at Wake Forest, and in Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, The Republic of Georgia, China and Japan. Along the journey, I have moved into the digital world and enjoy the image control it provides.
