In this two-day demonstration workshop, see how two artists who share many parallels within their bodies of work approach form with an array of varied and combined building techniques. Learn throwing approaches which plan for later altering, darting or combined slab building. See how custom made hump and slump molds can really up your slab building game. Slow down with some pinch building, sur-form shaping and details on reductive refinement techniques for a clean surface ready for decoration. We will discuss how diversifying making methods is beneficial
to a studio practice in both body and mind.

Christina Bendo will demonstrate her thrown and altered beaked pitcher form and her large segmented serving forms using pinch and refine techniques. Amanda Bury will show how she creates crisp facets on her thrown and altered cups and bowls and how using slab built parts for bottoms and lids provides finishing touches for altered work. Both artists will discuss and show the benefits of using plaster
and bisque molds for producing work.

Surface demonstrations will cover many decorating and image making methods including slip application, newsprint transfer, and using wax resist. We will discuss how the natural world provides inspiration for our work and explore the connection between earth, food, and vessels.

Bendo, Christina

Christina Bendo grew up helping her parents grow food in the red clay rich soil of Virginia. It seems a natural progression that she now works in a craft that uses the same raw materials needed to grow food to make objects used to serve it. After earning her B.A. at the University of Mary Washington, she went on to complete a three year assistantship with Trista Chapman. She has been a resident at LibertyTown Arts Workshop, the International Ceramics Studio in Hungary, STARworks Ceramics, and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. In 2019 Christina opened her own studio in downtown Waynesville, North Carolina. The flora and fauna of the surrounding mountains provide inspiration for the patterns on her wood fired, salt glazed wares.

Bury, Amanda

Amanda grew up in the Pacific Northwest part of the U.S. She is a lover of the outdoors, and remains forever influenced by her time working summer gigs on farms. Whenever possible she is a gardener (although difficult with the nomadic lifestyle of a studio artist) and a big advocate for supporting your local farmer. Amanda received a Bachelors of Art in Studio Art and a Bachelors of Art in Anthropology from Central Washington University. She then went on to pursue Post-Baccalaureate study in Ceramics at the University of Montana. Amanda has spent time as an artist in residence across the country including The Morean Center for Clay in Saint Petersburg, Florida and Belger Crane Yard Studios in Kansas City, Missouri. Amanda is now working as a full time studio artist based in Advance, NC. She regularly shows in invitational and national juried exhibitions. Her work is held in both public and private collections worldwide.
