This class focuses on the portrait, and highlights the qualities of color. Instruction will cover working from a model with demonstrations from the instructor, covering basic color mixing, tone, composition and proportion. A supply list will be provided.

  • Paints: 37 ML or 2 oz Must be all oil or all acrylic (can’t mix oil and water)
  • Titanium white
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cadmium Red
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Burnt Umber
  • Palette Paper is an easy way to mix and clean up. Or Freezer paper

  • Brushes:
  • 3 brushes, long handle, no smaller then size 8 or for our first class. ( approx.. ¼”, ½” 1” flats are fine.)
  • Surfaces:
  • Two to three 16"x20" primed canvases or canvas boards (these are cheaper)
  • Palette knife for mixing
  • Cloth rag(s) to clean brush
  • Pencils for sketching
  • Masking tape
  • Please bring a smart phone (for camera) if you have one.
Betz, Scott

Betz has been a faculty member at Winston Salem State University since 2004, having also previously served at Weber State University, Mississippi State University, and the University of Tennessee. His background as an artist and educator spans more than 30 years. His work has been showcased internationally in exhibits in more than 100 countries, including China, Colombia, Australia, Argentina, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Taiwan, Korea, Canada, Japan, and across the United States.
