An introductory course that explores basic canvas preparation for oil painting. This 6 week course will discuss different properties and opacities of oil paint colors, as well as techniques such as working wet into wet colors. The class finishes with an introduction to safe glazing techniques that will add luminosity to the work created during these six weeks.

  • Palette:
  • -For our first class, I can show you what I use for a palette, it’s very cheap and easy to clean.
  • Buy a square or rectangle cut of glass (not smaller than 11”x14”) from Ace or any hardware
  • store, foam core board, and duct tape. We can assemble these in our first class.
  • -If you decide to go a different route, Palette Paper is an easy way to clean up.

Bowden, Julia

Julia Bowden is a North Carolina based visual artist whose current art practice is focused around installation, drawing, and bronze sculptures. Julia grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and studied at Maryland Institute College of Art where she received a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a double major in Painting and Art History. Julia actively participated in landscape painting competitions in the Mid-Atlantic area until 2016 when she moved to Italy to pursue her Masters of Fine Arts in Florence. In Italy, Julia discovered an interest in sculpture, particularly marble carving, resin casting, and bronze casting. Her current body of work focuses on the cycle of growth and decay in nature. She creates large two and three dimensional murals evoking trees and forests. Julia is an active member of the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis, MD.
