As part of a series of virtual carving classes, This Zoom based class will get you started down the path of spoon carving and whittling away the hours. Keep your hands busy creating a beautiful and useful spoon of your own. Learn and practice working with a gouge to hollow out the bowl of your spoon and a whittling knife to bring its shape to life. We will discuss, demonstrate and practice proper tool sharpening and safe work habits, essential to the enjoyment of carving.

This class is designed for beginners who are interested in continuing their carving independently. The class will consist of two Zoom meetings to get you acquainted with your new tools give you time with and without instruction to complete your project.

The project this season is measuring spoons! Challenge yourself to carve out the specific volumes of a table and teaspoon. Table and teaspoon blanks will be included as a supply fee of $15 on top of the class tuition.

Blanks and tool kits are available for pick-up at Sawtooth. If you are not able to pick up your kit and/or blanks, please select the shipping option for an additional $15.50 while registering.

In addition to the class fee, an option will be given to purchase a beginner's spoon carving kit for 95$. The kit is curated by the instructor and consists of a straight blade, spoon gouge, safety gloves, sharpening kit, basswood spoon blank and a bench hook. This kit will be a mainstay for all following virtual carving classes with Sawtooth. If you already have our carving kit or your own tools, you can skip this step.

Registration for this class will be closed on Wednesday, 5/5/21 to allow coordination of kits. Domestic shipping and pick up only.

Vogel, Josie

Josie Vogel is an artist, woodworker and educator, working with the skills and traditions of craft to explore sculptural forms in useful objects. While pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, she fell in love with woodworking and has dedicated her career to the craft ever since. Whether in the form of sculpture, furniture, or small goods, her work prioritizes craft, utility, and the inherent beauty of the material. She creates objects that delight the eye and are meant to be touched, held, and put to good use. Through her work, Josie creates simple and elegant forms from a material that is alive with color, texture, luster and movement.

Josie makes her work in her home wood shop, surrounded by trees (for inspiration!) in Central North Carolina. Her work is available for purchase through Hudson’s Hill in Greensboro, NC and the Marta Blades Shop at Sawtooth in Winston-Salem.
