Living a Creative Life is a series of workshops offered by art therapist Emily Ortiz Badalamente in collaboration with local artists. Each 2-part workshop will feature a different artist who uses their creative process and artmaking practice for self-expression. These workshops are equal parts artist talks, tutorials, and community discussions. Come prepared to learn about the artist’s practice and creative process, learn a new skill or technique, and share your artmaking experiences with fellow participants.

Workshops will be held over 2 Zoom sessions. In the first session, participants will be part of an informal interview and Q+A with the artist about how they use creative expression in their life and personal artwork, learn a technique specific to that artists work, and experiment with artmaking on their own. The 2nd meeting will be an opportunity for the group to share their artwork with each other and the artist, discuss their creative process, and how it can play an important part in our daily wellbeing.

Kits are included in the cost of the class and will be available for mail or local pickup at Sawtooth. Open to ages 14+.

LESLIE SMITH -
Leslie Smith makes drawings, prints, and books based on her interest in mind, body, and the way we think about the self. She holds an MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book, an MLS in Library Science, and an MA in Spanish and Latin American literature. She lives in North Carolina and teaches printmaking and book arts classes.

Smith, Leslie

One of Leslie’s parents worked at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and she grew up running through the house’s warming kitchens and up and down the back passageways. Over the years, the artwork on the museum walls made an impression on her as well, leading her to earn an MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa. Her artwork includes drawing, printmaking, papermaking and bookbinding. As the Director of the Graphics and Textiles programs, she supports instructors, develops courses, and guides the direction of the programs. She will soon be starting a letterpress program in the printmaking department and is very excited about the cross-disciplinary possibilities between visual art and writing. “I think everyone should have the beautiful experience of artist’s flow. Flow is when you become wholly immersed in what you are doing, so that you lose track of time; the next decision of which color or material to use takes center stage. The hectic world recedes and you remember the friendship we have with our hands and materials. Sawtooth offers this opportunity to people every day. I think it is the best possible gift.” Contact Leslie: Email: lesliesmith@sawtooth.org Phone: 336-723-7395, ex 1214
