Students will learn the essentials of weaving on a floor loom. We discuss how the loom works, choose our yarns, dress the loom and weave our fabric. This workshop is designed for a fun time to explore weaving (assisted by a professional weaver) and creating your self-designed fabric.

Students will work with pre-wound warps (if you have a special request for the yarns and colors you’d like to use please contact the instructor as early as possible), thread the yarns on the looms (dress the loom) using a versatile pattern and weave structure to explore vibrant patters and color plays.

Students can use the studio to work on their projects between the class times.

Patton, Carol

Carol Patton holds a B.S. and M. Ed. in Vocational Home Economics Education from the University of Illinois. In 2015, she retired from the Wilkes County School System after a 38-year teaching career in Family and Consumer Science in both North Carolina and Illinois. Inspired to learn the art of weaving after inheriting her late mother’s loom, Carol learned to weave here at Sawtooth under the instruction of Pat Mauck. Realizing that “weaving possibilities” were endless, Carol continued to take many subsequent classes after that introductory class in 2007. At her home studio, Carol creates a variety of handwoven items for personal style and home décor on a wide range of looms- from multi-shaft floor looms to small hand-held pin looms. Carol sells her handwovens at the Sawtooth Gift Shop, Little River Gallery in Sparta, NC, and the new Blue Ridge Artisan Center housed within the 1915 Building in Wilkesboro, NC. Carol also teaches weaving classes for both youth and adults here at Sawtooth.
