With the passing of Pope Francis and the selection of a new pope, interest has grown in the history of the papacy and in the men who have succeeded each other as Bishop of Rome. This class will examine the origins of the papacy and its role from the early church to the present, with a particular focus on the role of the papacy from the 19th century onwards. This four-week course will include lecture, discussion, short readings, and video clips.

Since 1997 Karin Maag has been the director of the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies, one of the world’s foremost collections of works on or by John Calvin. She currently serves as adjunct faculty at Calvin Theological Seminary, teaching classes on church history and research methods. This marks her 50th course for CALL since 2000.
