“School days, School days, dear old Golden Rule days!..." We all remember our school days with various degrees of fondness, but how did societies develop ways to teach the rising generation both the knowledge and the values they needed? This course goes back to the earliest history of education, starting with the ancient Egyptians, up to the Reformation period. Along the way we'll meet teachers and students in ancient Greece and Rome, in monasteries and convents, and in municipal schools, academies, seminaries, and universities, shedding light on teaching methods, student experiences, and training in values and faith.
