On June 24, 1948, the Soviet Union blocked all road and rail travel to and from West Berlin, cutting off the city and igniting the Cold War. Two days later, planes loaded with food, water, and other supplies landed in West Berlin, the beginning of a monumental effort by the American and British air forces.
